“I graduated from Denison 5-30-53. I received my orders four days later, to report for induction 8-15-53. Two years in the 11th Airborne Division, Ft. Campbell, Ky. Discharged as a Corporal after 15 jumps! Haven’t done anymore since. Turned 85 in January.”
Lt. Col. Dave “Charlie” Brown, USMC
“After Denison, I served in the Marine Corps for 21 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. My career highlights are earning a Silver Star Medal while serving in Vietnam, teaching economics at the U.S. Naval Academy, and heading the Marine Corps Procurement Budget. Along the way I received an MBA in research and development management from The George Washington University. For 10 years following my retirement, I consulted to the Marine Corps and U.S. Navy in the area of logistics. For the past six years, I had been the executive director of the Second Marine Division Association editing a quarterly magazine, coordinating two reunions each year and addressing concerns of the 5,000 members until this past August. Currently I am Executive Director for the Museum of the Marine.
I wrote a book, titled Battlelines, that tells the five-year history of my rifle company in Vietnam. Battlelines received the 2006 Gold Medal for Best Memoir in 2006 by the Military Writers Association of America. I have recently completed a book a novel about the Marines in Nicaragua from 1926-1928. Also, I had authored professional books on training, information systems and logistics.”

“I served in the U.S. Marine Corps. I signed up during my sophomore year at Denison. Spent two summers in officer’s candidate school, and then graduated in 1957 in my dress whites, and received my 2nd lieutenant bars. I was on active duty for two years, and then as a 1st Lieutenant, for six years in USMC reserves. There were three other Denison 1957 graduates who also served: Walt Nadzak, Jim Click and Tony Baker, if memory serves me correctly. Walt and I were the only Betas.”

“Served in Korean War 1953-55 as a sergeant. Was assistant director and played trumpet with the 63rd Army Band and 4th AD Band. As with my Beta Brothers, I have tried to stay in touch over all these years.”

“I graduated from Denison in 1954. The Korean War was going on and after being deferred for college, I joined the United States Marines in 1954-57. I went through Officer’s Training School, graduating as a Second Lieutenant. I served in Okinawa for 14 months, and finished at Camp Pendleton. Semper Fi!”
Maj. William Rogers, USMC (ret.)
“I am a retired major, Marine Corps Reserve. I was commissioned at my Denison graduation in 1958 after having spent two of my college summers training at Quantico. I served on active duty for five years and another 15 in the Reserve.”
Dick Briggs, LCDR (MC) USN
“A great many of us served during the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts. Most all the physicians were drafted unless they signed up in a program to serve in a particular branch.
I signed up during the first year of medical school and was commissioned as a Lt. (MC) USN for my senior year. We went directly to the USN Hospital in Philadelphia, PA for Internship and spent the next 3 years thereafter in the Submarine Service. I was on active duty as a physician from 1958 to 1963 and resigned my commission in 1967 leaving as a LCDR (MC) USN. Although our professional careers were delayed for several years, I wouldn’t have traded it for anything because of the maturation and experience involved. We also learned a thing or two about patriotism.”
Richard G. Lugar, USN
“I served in the United States Navy. After graduating from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, I attended the Naval Air Intelligence School in Jacksonville, Florida. My next assignment was to serve on the intelligence briefing team for Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. My total period of active duty extended over three years and four months from January 1957 through April 1960.”
Lt. Col. Robert C. St. John, Jr., USAF
“I served in the US Air Force from June 1968 to October 1988, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. During my career, I flew T-38 trainers as an Instructor Pilot and C-141 transport aircraft. My flights took me most of the way around the globe. My final assignment was with US Central Command at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL. I had one very enjoyable overseas assignment at Ramstein AB, Germany from 1981 to 1985.”
