Jim Banks ’84: From Pledge Trainer to Proud Alumnus

If you pledged Beta in 1983-1984, you probably remember James (Jim) Banks as your chapter VP and pledge trainer. Now, Jim shares his tales of the people he got to meet through Alpha Eta, the milestones he’s celebrating, and why today’s active brothers make him so proud to be a Beta. Read on for his story.

Photo Flashback: The Baritone Betas

A few months ago, we asked you if you could caption this photo, and Mark Shaw ’80 told us all about it. It turns out these four guys were all members of a campus singing group called the “Baritone Betas.” Those pictured (from left to right) were Wild Phil Taylor, Ritchie “Pinto” Kendricks, Gib “Snake Trub(andor), and Henry “Raccons” Jenkins. Mark said, “The photo was taken before a talent show in Columbus, so they had on their Denison sweaters to show some spirit. Unfortunately, they weren’t very good.” Click here to share your own throwback photos from your Beta days.

D. Jeffrey Ireland ’76

Jeff Ireland ’76 chose Beta Theta Pi back in 1973 both because of the personalities of the guys as well as the diversity. There were members there from all walks of life.

“We were a very fun group,” he says. “Yet, we were a strong house academically, and many of the brothers have gone on to great success in their careers.” His fondest memories of those days, he says, are all connected to life and activities in the Beta house. “The Christmas party with Santa and an elf, our formals in the living room with the house decorated, our water slide down the back hill, the Beta war, hell week, and many late nights in the bar,” he recalls.

Lost Touch Without Meaning To? Our Site Can Solve That!

When we joined Beta Theta Pi we didn’t join just to spend three or four years together. We joined to get a lifetime of brotherhood. So if you feel out of the loop, we want to make it easy to get right back in. We know it’s easy to lose touch without meaning to, to glance at these eLetters and decide you don’t have time to engage any further—we’ve all been guilty of that. But our site is like our own private version of Facebook, and these features make it simple and painless to stay connected, no matter how long it’s been or where you are in the world.
